Below: The School of Applied Science debating team in August 1992, just before our climatic final against debaters from the National Institute of Education. Even though we did win the 1992 championships, I wasn't a very confident speaker then. But I was asked to lead the team in the following year in 1993, and it turned out immensely well, winning the 1993 series too. |

This was the team that started it all for me. That's Harminder Pal Singh, a rather famous personality in the University back then. Dr. Khong Chooi Peng (third from left) and Mdm. Chan (sixth from left), were both coaches for the faculty team. The following is the cover of the faculty news magazine (November 1993) after I led the team in its third consecutive win in the Inter-Faculty debates of that year. |

The happy winners of the tournament, taken right after the debate. From left to right, back row: Joseph Tan, Jeremy Chew, Ajit Mohan, Tay Eng Wah, Tony Thomas, and Harminder Pal Singh. Front row, Dr. Khong, Mdm. Chan and myself. Joseph also wrote a vigorous article on this particular tournament, and you can read it here, from the original pages of the article. Synapses November on Debating: "Creme de la creme, Again!" The article itself is fairly vocal, so do keep in mind that this was during the height of inter-faculty rivalry in the debates. :) |
